Domestic fires are responsible for 75% of all fire deaths and injuries. In 2004, there were almost 60,000 home fires, causing 375 deaths, injuring 12,000 people and costing an average £25,000 each. (ODPM reports: 'The Economic Cost of Fire: Estimates for 2004' 'Fire Statistics, United Kingdom, 2004').
Proper installation and use of smoke detectors in homes have almost certainly saved lives over the years, but for the most vulnerable – the very young, very old, sick, disabled – only fire sprinklers can prevent death and injury.
There's no doubt that fire sprinklers save lives – and property – and are the only devices that can detect a fire, sound the alarm, call the fire brigade and extinguish or control the fire.
